KISA RIMFIRE BENCHREST START'S 2007

Rim Fire Match #1, May 19th. 2007,Kodiak Alaska Horizontal rain forced us to cancel the first Rimfire bench rest match scheduled for May 13th.  However, popular demand had us hold the first Rimfire match on Saturday, May 19th.  If there are any questions regarding cancellations and make-up matches, please feel free to call Mike Kerwood at 486-8141.

The weather for our re-scheduled match was perfect on the following Saturday, and a favorable forecast a few days before prompted us to hold a make-up match that Saturday.

 Setting

We had a field of six shooters show up for the make-up competition on Saturday, in spite of very few who knew about it.  Partly cloudy skies, warm temps in the 50’s, and switchy breezes were the backdrop for a bunch of rusty rim fire shooters.  Winter weather had afforded us no practice since last season.  The winds were from 12 to 3 o’clock and would go from calm to 13 miles per hour without warning.  The winds and lack of shooting practice provided lots of excuses for dropped points, but the field of shooters posted surprisingly high scores.  Half the competitors shot clean, or the maximum amount of points of 400 for 40 shots.  It was the X count, or Bullseye`s that determined the final placement and that total was very close.

RF1-08 Aaron Reed, who is on temporary duty in Kodiak with the Navy, once again joined us as he did with our first center fire shoot.  Aaron proved himself to be a very accomplished marksman with a borrowed rifle from Erik.  Aaron’s skill with both rim fire and center fire rifles makes him a tough competitor.  Aaron shot a clean score of 200 points for the first half of the match held at 50 yards.  The second half of the match held at 100 yards was the part that cost Aaron his drop points.

Gary Byers showed up with his custom Ruger 10-22, and despite no practice since last season, he shot an impressive 390 12x.  Gary shot a 197 and 9x at the tough 100 yard stage.

Rain may cause the cancellation of our Sunday evening shoots, however, please call Mike Kerwood at 486-8141 for match status and the possibility of make-up matches.Good Shooting !!! Michael KerwoodRimfire Match # 1 Scores May 19th. 2007

Rimfire Rifle Match # 2 May 27th 2007, Kodiak Alaska            Cold winds under dark grey skies kept attendance down for our second Rimfire rifle match of 2007.  The local crab festival downtown and friends of the NRA banquet also competed for local shooters attention.  While the skies look like rain any minute, the only bad weather was damp winds at 8 to 15 mph with temps in the low 40s.             Mike Haskins managed his first Rimfire win with Rio taking second place. It only takes a momentary loss of concentration to throw a shot into the 9 ring with winds like that at a hundred yards, and move from 1st to 3rd. place. Our core of good shooters didn’t drop many points due to the level of marksmanship they achieved through lots of experience.  Many shooters are posting clean scores of 400 points.  It’s the close X counts that determine the final place, and dropping a point can leave a person in third, where a 399 would have been a winning score a couple years ago.             Although the 8 to 15 mph winds switching direction provided lots of excuses for dropped points, and the field of shooters took it in stride and posted perfect point totals of 400.  This says a lot about those who stuck it out for every match and compete regardless of weather conditions.  Experience is the best Teacher, and it shows up for those that shoot the most.             If you’d like to reach a higher level of marksmanship, learn to read the wind, and pick up knowledge on shooting, then come out and shoot with us.  The road to experience is like every other path, it starts with the first step.

Call me if you’d like to get started regarding our schedule, 486-8141.

Rimfire Match # 3, June 10 2007, Kodiak Alaska

Our only warm sunny day in weeks, was the setting for the 3rd. Rimfire match of 2007.Except for the winds that were gusting 15-20mph, from the 12-3:00 direction, it was a perfect day to be outside for a shooting competition.             Being sunny weather we saw the return of George Kimball, who refers to himself as a “Fair Weather Shooter”. George hadn’t shot since last years matches, but years of experience showed in George’s total score. In spite of the challenging winds, George’s skill showed in the final results, as the entire field turned in very close totals, and George was only a point or two off.

 RF3-05

In spite of the winds, 80% of the Shooters shot clean scores of 200 points, for the 1st half of the match, held at the 50 yard line. The 100 yard half of the match proved to be the most challenging for all of us. The final scores of all the Shooters showed the wind did lower the final averages, but once again they were all very close.              The gang of Rio, Erik, ,and George were great in helping tear down, and stow away all the target stands and gear after the match. Their help and that of “Official Scorer/Photographer” Mike Haskins, make these matches possible.  Rimfire Match # 4 Results, July 7th. 2007, Kodiak Alaska             Overcast skies above, with cold gusty winds swirling all around us were the back drop for our 4th Rimfire match of 2007. Sunny conditions in town had us all show up under dressed for the event far out of city limits at Salonie Creek. Calm winds also prevailed at our homes, but the velocities at the range were from 3-19 mph, with no predominant direction. While assembling the wind vanes on stands, I actually witnessed a complete 360 degree turn of the wind flags on the firing line. Normally winds of this magnitude ensure that shooters are safe from biting bugs. However we experienced swarms of a new mutant insects that could accurately land in the breezes, and bite into any uncovered skin. Watching wind flags point 180 degrees apart, with the tails straight out and up, gave us the assurance that this was to be a tough match. As is usual, the wind laid down with the coming of sunset, after the match, and the clouds of biting bugs had us tearing down the equipment in record time.             Clearing the range in record time was the only good record set at our 4th match of the season, as our totals were the worst we’ve posted in several years. Mike Haskins ,and I both dropped 2 points each at 100 yards, which is horrible considering that all of last year, I only dropped 3 points in all 12 matches. Still it’s a level playing field with the wind, and as usual it was a close match with the “Bullyeye`s” or X count that determined the winner. The 50 yd stage or 1st half the match reflected that everyone could handle the wind well, and scores didn’t suffer much. This says a lot about our field of regular shooters who have come a long way in reading the wind. It was the 100 yard relay, where the projectiles are at the mercy of twice the distance of the swirling currents that had us bewildered

Gary

Gary & Sue Byers joined us again, and helped out by hauling all the target stands to the firing line, saving Haskins a lot of work setting up for the match. Rio & Erik always jump in and automatically clear them away in the back of Rios truck. This ensures that everything runs smoothly in running the competitions and a minimum amount of time are spent conducting the whole shooting match. It was great to have Gary & Sue show up with their truck, and provide unexpected extra hand. Thanks to all who donate their time and labor to make these matches possible. To view the pictures of both Rimfire & Centerfire Benchrest pictures from 2007 click here http://kisaorg.com/v-web/gallery/album85              So far this season we’ve only had to cancel 2 Benchrest matches, but they’ve both been Rimfire events, hence we’ve had a lot more Centerfire matches than Rimfire Good Shooting!!!!!!!!!! Rimfire Benchrest Match # 5, Aug. 5th. `07

 Kodiak Alaska

Warm steady sea breezes, just before official start time, turned into a blender of whirling hard winds, by the 6:30pm start time. Those of us who arrived early to set up the equipment, and get in some practice, found the sight adjustments we made were far off, with the wind changes. The only way to keep our shots close to intended impact point was to wait for all the wind flags to point the same direction at the same time and shoot. It didn’t matter which direction the wind came from, it was more important to have the flags just all agree to the same direction at once. It was hard to find a steady direction, as the wind came from all points of the compass, but patience would be rewarded if you waited long enough for the wind to swing around back to a general quadrant. As an example, Haskins and I both checked our sighter shots at 100 yards, then quickly launched our twenty record rounds in under 5 minutes. It was necessary to shoot rapidly as possible, as when the clock began, the wind was holding a steady direction making for some predictable impact before the wind swung around 180 degrees. Those that took advantage of the steady direction, that only lasted the first five minutes of each relay, scored better than those who took the whole twenty minutes allotted.

Colin,Rio,

Mike Haskins took advantage of his fast shooting, right bolt, left port Hall actioned rifle, and finished both the 50 yard, and 100 yard relays in less than 5 minutes. The configuration of a right bolt, left port, allows the shooter to work the action with their right hand, and feed the ammo into it with their left hand. By coincidence the winds held steady for the first few minutes of each distance of the 50 and 100 yard relays. This permitted Mike Haskins to rapidly place all 40 rounds of the match into the “X” ring, and finish with a new personal best, and tie the course high score of 400-40X. It’s quite a feat to shoot a perfect score of placing all forty shots, twenty at each distance, into the “Bulls eye” or “X” ring. I was the first to do it in August of 2006, and have not repeated that score since. Haskins used the strategy of shooting fast while the wind was holding from the same direction, and concentrating on the wind flags for any changes that would drift his shots out of the Bulls eye. As stated before, “It’s a record that can be tied, but not broken”, it’s as rare as pitching a perfect ball game of striking out 27 batters. Haskins is to be congratulated for his accomplishment.

Erik Berggren did very well considering the winds we dealt with that day, as he too also turned one of his personal best “X” counts. If not for the winds catching one shot, and pushing it into the “9” ring, Erik would have tied for 2nd place, but turned in a final of 399-34X.

Gary Byers also attended our 5th. Rimfire match of the year, but was plagued with ammo problems. Gary uses a semi-auto, Ruger 10-22, and has had a hard time finding accurate ammunition that will cycle the bolt and feed through his rifle. Since all rimfire ammo is factory produced, with the selection being endless of different kinds made, the trick is to find a model that shoots accurately, but with a semi-auto, it also has to have enough pressure to cycle the bolt back and feed into the chamber. Most target type rimfire ammo is low pressure/low velocity, and this combination doesn’t feed through most semi-auto type rifles. It certainly breaks your focus if every round jams, or fails to feed through the rifle. Gary’s Ruger 10-22 has turned in some great scores, but now Gary needs to find the type of ammo that is accurate and feeds through his rifle. Anyone who has a type of ammo in mind for a solution, please feel free to contact me at (907)486-8141

Our 5th. match witnessed the return of prone shooter Hamilton Long, who uses open/iron sights to compete with. We do have a separate division for those who shoot rimfire in the “Prone” or laying down position. Hamilton is very handicapped in that each shot can’t be seen upon impact, but only seconds later if the shooter has a spotting scope to look through. It’s a miracle Hamilton can still see the iron sights at his age, let alone lay down on the ground long enough to shoot accurately. If I had to shoot from that position, I would need a crane to lift me off the ground afterwards. In spite of all the drawbacks to his shooting style, Hamilton turns in some very respectable totals, including a 194-7X at the 50 yard distance.

Rimfire Benchrest Match # 6, Aug.19th,`07

     Kodiak Alaska

The Rain lasted most of the day for our scheduled 6th Rimfire Match of 2007. Since Mike Haskins, and I were responsible for setting up the match at 4:00pm, and the rain showed no signs of letting up we decided to not attend or hold the match. My medical issues were also a factor in cancelling the match, as I didn’t feel up to showing up several hours early and trying to assemble equipment needed to host the event. Sure enough, as soon as we called and let folks know that we we’re cancelling the match; the sun broke out just before the 6:30 official start time. Erik and Rio Berggren had already lined up some new shooters, and had their truck loaded for the shoot. Being driven to shoot, no matter the conditions, the Berggren’s managed to hold a 6th. Match in spite of Haskins, and I staying at home.

The K.I.S.A. club benefited in having the entries fees collected, and four shooters participate to have our 6th. rimfire match of the season. It was a relief to have the Berggren’s step up and take over hosting the match, and introducing 2 new shooters to the sport. Thanks to the Berggren’s for making it possible, and setting up, and tearing down the equipment.

New shooters Colin Spencer, and Kathy Daquilanea participated in their 1st match due to the efforts by the Berggren’s. Good Shooting!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Michael Kerwood Rimfire Match # 6, Aug.19th. 2007 Kodiak Alaska
