" The BEAR is waiting for you try your luck on him "
Saturday, August 15th Saw the years
first Charging Bear match. With the generous donation of time, effort and knowledge, Roger Smith and his son, Justin made
the intermittent rain the ever present bugs a minor distraction to a great turnout and a lot of fun. With
over 15 shooters coming through, and a good mix of pistols, rifles, and shotguns, the bear didn’t stand a chance!
The “Bear” is an archery target that is attached to a run line at the
top of the hill at the Salonie Creek pistol range and when the match director is ready, gives the word to release the bear
who then comes “charging” down the hill. It is encouraged to try and get at least three shots
off before the bear makes it to the end of the running line. No scores are kept but there was plenty of
congratulations for good groups and a lot of good natured harassment for shots that missed! Entry
fees for this event are $5 which will get you two “charges” from the bear. To re-enter, there
is a $3.00 fee that gets you another two “charges”. There is no limit to how often you can
shoot! It is encouraged to try and keep the calibers “realistic”
and the 45-70 tended to dominate the rifle selection but we also saw a 375 H & H, 375 Ruger and 44 Mag., while some hefty
pistol calibers such as 454, 44 Magnum, and even a 460 S & W made a showing. The two shotguns that
ran the course were 12 gauges.
